Short reviews - Set 1 (Misery, Following, Loft)

In the lack of free time necessary for complete reviews we'll post short reviews of some random, usually just seen, movies.

Misery (1990)
USA, 107min
Drama, Thriller
Director: Rob Reiner
Writers: Stephen King (novel), William Goldman
Stars: James Caan, Kathy Bates, Richard Farnsworth

A famous novelist Paul Sheldon (James Caan) is "rescued" from a car crash by an obsessed fan Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates). Annie is conviced that Paul's latest work isn't good enough and she decided to 'save' him.
Simple, but tense, creepy, but fun and interesting. One of the better
Stephen King's adaptations, but it is also up to the simplicity of the story itself.
Kathy Bates is brilliant, one of those performances that you remember for long time. Only downside is the ending which looks somehow sloppy and hastily done, as if after final fight they had one more day of shooting so they hastily done it in few hours. But after all it's a simple and excellent thriller.

Following (1998)
UK, 69min
Crime, Drama, Mystery
Director: Christopher Nolan
Writer: Christopher Nolan
Stars: Jeremy Theobald, Alex Haw, Lucy Russell

First movie by Christopher Nolan and probably the best one made with $6,000 or less.
It's a short story about wannabe writer who follows random people to get inspiration. One day he meets a thief who saw the chance to use him.
Independent and amateurish but very good in every aspect. Plot is very interesting and acting is great, especially for amateurs filming after their day-jobs. 69 minutes are more then enough for the this story so it’s great that Nolan didn’t stretched it like a lot of his colleagues like to do. Technical part isn’t great but it’s probably the best that one can do with almost no money. It’s a must see for all young and amateur (wannabe) filmmakers.
There’s a reason why Nolan filmed Memento with Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano only two years later.

Loft (2008)
Belgium, 118min
Crime, Drama, Mystery
Director: Erik Van Looy
Writer: Bart De Pauw
Stars: Koen De Bouw, Filip Peeters, Matthias Schoenaerts

Very good Belgian mystery thriller about five friends who share an apartment for a romantic adventures. One day they found dead girl in the apartment and suspicion immediately fell on one of them.
Development of story is pretty original and the end is almost unpredictable. Every segment of the movie is solid, characters are memorable although not too elaborated, atmosphere is great and the plot steals your concentration for two hours. Acting is one of biggest downsides but it’s not bad enough to disrupt viewing pleasure.
Definitely one of better mystery flicks in last few years.
